We spent Thanksgiving in Israel, as one does, you know. It's no Beirut - garden spot of the Mediterranean - but it'll do in a pinch. I was amazed by the following: a) it was in the low 80s, delightfully warm; b) it seemed as though everyone spoke Russian, and the food in the grocery stores was all in Russian; c) Tel Aviv is an oasis, but the rest of the country really does look like the scenery in the Charleton Heston movie; d) people really shouldn't mistreat the camels the way that they do; e) the Palestinian settlements are really RIGHT there near Jerusalem. Yet i never felt scared....
