Venice - Very Wet!

I love the photo above - the sun shining on the row on gondolas as the tide seeps up onto the main square.

So Venice is wet, wet, wet. As you could see before in the photo on St. Mark's Square at night, we missed the tides the first night, so we didn't really cotton on to the actual difficulties of the fact that the city goes underwater twice a day. And then we went to lunch the second day, and literally within half an hour water crept up the alleyway, and we were trapped! The only way out was through 2-3 inch deep water. And of course only our girl in pink was in the appropriate footwaear. She loved it! But even the boots weren't enough, which is why she's wet up to her knees here. The rest of us ended up with wet socks and wet shoes, and even better we went down this street only to realize it dead-ended at a canal and we had to walk back the other way. Those stairs go nowhere! This is the famous bridge in Rialto, which often shows up in movies. From the water it seemed like it was quite far from where we were staying, but then we ended up walking it and it was only 20 minutes. The key to Venice, the fun of the city, apparently, is just wandering around and getting lost and ending up somewhere unexpected. And this was just a beautiful decoration on a building along one of the canals.

SO jealous!! You guys live such and extravagant life! Perhaps someday our kids will see a quarter of the sites you have seen!

Perhaps I live in a closet because I had no idea that the city flooded every day! or at all even! That must've been some sight! Venice is now on my top 10 list (I started it just now... so I actually have no idea what the other nine are!) :)
